Awards and competitions

The Graduate School sponsors several awards and competitions throughout the year.

Doctoral Scholars Program, Institutional Award

The VCU Graduate School has partnered with the SREB Doctoral Scholars Program to provide support services to underrepresented minority students seeking their Ph.D. and plan to become college or university professors. Preference will be given to STEM disciplines. The Institutional Award is for scholars who are within the first year of their Ph.D. program or are expecting admission before the fall semester begins. The Institutional Award offers three years of program support. In addition, the award provides professional development support and covers expenses associated with attending the Compact for Faculty Diversity Annual Institute on Teaching and Mentoring. For the first two years, the Graduate School will pay university tuition only (not fees), $24,000 stipend support and administrative cost. In the student’s third year, school/department will pay university tuition, stipend support for each student commensurate with similar fields who are at the same level and administrative cost. The school/department will pay the university fees for this Institutional Award.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT ®) Competition

Three Minute Thesis (3MT ®) is a research communication competition originally developed by The University of Queensland in 2008, and now has been widely adopted at universities around the world. The exercise challenges master’s and doctoral students to present a compelling talk on their thesis/dissertation topic and its significance. Many theses and dissertations can be over 80,000 words and take hours to present, but students in this competition have just three minutes and one slide to convey their often highly-technical research to a lay audience.
